Tuba Christmas History
Merry Tuba Christmas is the creation of Harvey Phillips world renowned Tuba performer and teacher to honor his teacher Willim Bell and to promote the artistry and sonority of the Tuba and Euphonium. Phillips had Rochester Composer Alec Wilder write some arrangements of Christmas Carols for Tuba and Euphonium Ensembles. The first Tuba Christmas was in Rockefeller Center in New York City in December 1974. In 1983 Rochester had its first Tuba Christmas, at Midtown Plaza, sponsored by Monroe Community College Music Department. Now, there are over 130 Tuba Christmas events worldwide.
